ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF A HIGHWAY ON THE SOILS OF AN URBAN-TYPE SETTLEMENT
Abstract
The article discusses changes in soil quality indicators under the influence of the R-152 highway in the area of the urban-type settlement of Palekh, Ivanovo region. The soil condition was as-sessed according to the following indicators: soil mechanical composition, available moisture content, and general soil suitability. An aqueous extract was obtained from the analyzed soil samples, in which the pH and the presence of Cl- and SO42- ions were determined. Soil samples were taken at three points: at the edge of the highway, at a distance of 10 and 50 meters from the curb, respectively. Under the influence of the highway, the mechanical composition of soils changes – the closer to the roadside, the greater the inclusion of the sand fraction, while the available moisture content in the soil decreas-es. Analysis of soil water extraction showed a slight decrease in pH and a significant presence of Cl- and SO42- ions. The study of the general suitability of soils showed the complete unsuitability of the soil for germination of seeds on the side of the road and limited germination of seeds in soil samples at a distance of 10 and 50 meters from the highway, respectively. An assessment of the species composi-tion of the phytosociety revealed that an unfavorable habitat for plants is formed under the influence of the highway and only individual phyto–indicator species are able to tolerate the features of this en-vironment. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the highway has an adverse effect on soil conditions and the need for measures to protect them.
